I am going to have a small kitchen in my new house. I am going to put glass tile backsplash above all counter space, which is on one side of the rectangular kitchen. I am not sure how far up I should put the backsplash from the counter to the cabinets. The backsplash is 12" x 12". I would like it to be decorative, but not overdone.Should I just do 1 sheet all the way across of the 12" x 12" with the exception of the stove area so you can see the paint/wall, go all the way up to the cabinets, or do half a sheet?
Also, at the stove area, should I go all the way up to the vent?
I know it is probably a personal preference, but I would like some advice. I can't actually find any pics of 1/2 wall tiled, only full wall space on the net. The tile I am using is at the link below and I am using Palm Leaf SW 7735 colored paint from Sherwin Williams.

When I said the tile all the way across the counter area with the exception of the stove area, I just meant because it would probably go higher than the other areas due to it being the cooking area. But as stated, I was still unsure if I should put that all the way up to the range hood.- ANSWER:

You can easily incorporate those tile in the back splash by using a field tile of something else and use those as a stripe .Use anything from a natural 4x4 or 6x6 stone . Or use those tiles in a design in a focal point such as behind the stove and use a stone look or even just a basic white or bone tile in the field. This cuts down dramatically the costs..

We have tried to find tile that matches our counter and wall color, but have yet to find anything. We have considered plain black, but I think it would be too much, even though our kitchen is pretty light.
We plan on selling in the nest 2-3 years, so I wanted to get others opinions about the backsplash and not just do what I thought looked right.

The first choice on the second link. You have a kitchen with simple lines to it so you will want to avoid something too "busy" like the firs link. The second choice of the second link is a bit to plain. It will not add to the kitchen but make it appear boring with it's straight lines. The first choice and the third choice are for lighter colored kitchens. Yours is darker so you should you want something that doesn't lighten it too much. The second choice is more of a muted shine.Out of curiosity, have you checked with lowes or home depot to see if they can order a tile in the color that you would like? Your countertop coloring would make an excelent backsplash transition.

I would like to put some ceramic tile above a backsplash behind my stove. This would be the area above th formica backsplash, beneath the kitchen hood and underneath the adjoining cabinents.My thought is to lay the tile directly on the wall - which is a combinations of plaster, and built up wallboard (very smooth and even), with the edges trimmed in bullnose tile.
I really don't want to add the 1/2 inch for backerboard or rip the plaster out to get the joists.
How well would it work laying the tile directly onto the old plaster and built-up wallboard?

ANSWER:
Your glass tile will not need to be sealed. They won t take the sealer any way.. All natural stones need to be sealed even before installing. I do mine twice before installation to prevent staining with any adhesive I use.
I use on a regular basis either Miracle 511 Impregnator or Tile Lab penetrating sealer. Never a call back in 20 years using either product.
As for a grout, most all stones need a sanded grout. care must be used in grouting around glass tile s with a sanded grout as not to scratch them.
Seal every thing again after a minimum of 72 hrs. This after the stone and glass is completely clean of all grout haze.. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there.. GL

help painting wierd kitchen layout?
my kitchen in our house has been driving me crazy for 2 years now. it has wierd, old orangy/sand/light brownish ceramic tile counters and backsplash with a brick red colored fleck in it. my cabinets and walls are off-white. i hate the counters, but it is too expensive to replace them. i thought of painting the walls or cabinets with the brick red color to play off the color in the counters, and possibly decorate in some sort of spanish theme. the cabinets are a continous huge built-in unit on top and bottom across 3 of the 4 walls (traditional U-shaped) in the kitchen with only a couple of inches around door and window frames that is left as wall to paint, but the fourth wall (across the room from U) is pretty open and has no cabinets above counter. Would u paint the cabinets, their doors, or the walls, or a combination? i thought about the walls but don't know if it would look like i only painted half the room? what do u think?

it will ruin your cabinets to paint over the finish but you could strip them down, sand them, and either refinish them or primer and paint just make sure you think through it befor you do it.
also if you know any one in the carpentry buisness you might want to ask their advice. you can paint the walls and just refinish the cabinet doors too. i have seen that done alot. and it looks nice.

I'm thinking about broadening my field of expertise(I paint murals) to include painted backsplashes for kitchens and elsewhere. I bought a book on how to lay ceramic tile, I just need to know if there's anyone out there with experience in this, and how they felt about it, any ideas?ANSWER:
I've painted ceramic tiles (to use as coasters), with great success using "glossies" paint. Just apply it to a clean tile, and then bake it in your oven at the specified temperature & time.The end result is a washable, highly usable surface. Mine are now going on 7 years old, and look the same as the day I first painted them. They get constant use, too, which says a lot for the quality of the paint
Another idea: You can purchase bisqued (fired) tiles at your local clay supplier. With these, apply underglazes (which you paint on like you would oils or acrylics--paint a picture or design, essentially) and then fire. Once the underglazes are fired, coat them with some clear glaze, fire again, and you have your finished work. These would be great for backsplashes.
If you want to create a truly custom backsplash, though, you probably want to consider making your own tiles (who says they have to be square???). If you don't have the equipment (it can get pretty costly with a slab roller, kiln, tools, glazes, etc), you should seriously consider taking a class at your local community college or university. If you haven't worked with clay before, it will be good for you to learn the qualities of the medium; the importance of drying times, the advantages of using a particular type of clay, glaze interactions, etc.
